to have genera los tiempos perfectos, incluidos los suyos propios.
we've worked too much, hemos trabajado demasiado
tonight I haven't had any pain, esta noche no he tenido dolor
did they have good weather?, ¿les hizo buen tiempo?
they have had long enough, han tenido suficiente tiempo
Las secuencias interrogativas y las negativas con not del presente suelen construirse con el propio to have como auxiliar. Pero cuando to have adopta ciertos significados (tomar, conseguir, no necesitar...) se utilizan las formas do / does / don't / doesn't.
she hasn't friends, ella no tiene amigos (menos frecuente)
she hasn't got friends, ella no tiene amigos
she doesn't have friends, ella no tiene amigos
did Jane have a bad time in Madrid?, ¿tuvo Jane mal tiempo en Madrid?
they didn't have any dream, ellos no tuvieron ningún sueño
Mary didn't have her bike, Mary no tenía su bicicleta
En expresiones informales de posesión con el presente de indicativo, se utiliza to have got, construyéndose las secuencias interrogativas y negativas con las formas haven't / hasn't seguidas de got o bien con las formas do / does / don't / doesn't seguidas de have.
Para las expresiones menos informales se utiliza to have sin añadir got, construyéndose las secuencias interrogativas y negativas con do not / does not / don't / doesn't seguidas de have.
En el pasado es menos frecuente hadn't got, por lo que las formas interrogativas y negativas se construirían con did / did not / didn't have.
she has Ø / got a black cat, ella tiene un gato negro
have you Ø / got a comb?, ¿tienes un peine?
bacteria don't have eyes, las bacterias no tienen ojos
Linda didn't have nice clothes, Linda no tenía bonitos vestidos
